Fabrics Are A Cornerstone Of Interior Design

To create a home that’s comfortable for the whole family, we should choose fabrics and furniture wisely. We don’t want to stress every time kids go near the sofa with messy little hands. We should live life without compromise… well, as far as fabric on our sofas go. A few years back, Crypton fabrics hit the interior design market. This innovation was thrilling as it repels liquids and even oil-based spills, which makes it durable and stain-resistant. It also has odor control to resist the smell of our furry friends. How is this invention possible? During the manufacturing process, each thread is individually covered in Crypton’s special, patented formula. This coating includes a variety of specially mixed materials, such as water-based antimicrobial agents that fight bacteria and create a stain-resistant surface. In addition, UV stabilizers and flame retardant materials are also added to ensure that the fabric color does not fade and provide extra protection against fires. Crypton fabrics also have the look and feel of any other fabric we may want to incorporate into our designs. Their touch is soft and comfortable, unlike previous UV-resistant outdoor fabrics with a plastic feel, introduced in the past.

Most liquids simply roll off of Crypton fabrics, or they can be quickly absorbed with a dry towel. Stains are wiped away easily for peace of mind.

The choices are endless; leading furniture vendors have embraced this concept and offer a myriad of colors, textures, fibers, and patterns for the use of the interior design community. It is truly surprising to see performance linens, velvets, cottons in weaves, ikats, stripes, geometrics, and solids with trending and timeless colors.

Comfort Was A Priority For This Home's Furniture

Furniture selection seems easy for a family room, but the word “comfort” comes in different sizes and styles. The word “comfort”, also comes into play depending on the person we are designing for. It is so important to consider the stature of a client and understand the dimensions that are needed in order for utmost support. A higher back and shallow seat depth tend to be a bit more traditional and a better fit for a more formal setting, whereas a lower to the ground, the deep-seated sofa is ideal for lounging. Cushion fill is another important factor when considering comfort. The different types of fill include feather, polyester, foam, spring down and down plush, which all offer various comfort points of a sofa. For this particular family room, down plush cushions made the most sense, since the room served as a gathering spot to watch children’s shows before bedtime. Quiet time doesn’t always work as the little ones jump from sofa to sofa. Fortunately, down plush cushions with feathers within the casing, are easily reshaped to their original appearance so the room can look as if it was never touched.

The Color Palette Supports The Cozy Feel Of This Home

Color was also important to this couple; we used rich, cool hues of greens and blues for the furniture and accessories, surrounded by a neutral palette for the walls, using Sherwin Williams 7011 Natural Choice and Sherwin Williams 1015 Skyline Steel as the field paint colors. These colors helped capture the cozy feel they were chasing after. The bathroom adjacent to this area was an opportunity for a natural transition of another soothing paint color, we enhanced the small space with the deep tones of Benjamin Moore 2130-40 Black Pepper. Accenting with bright white cabinetry and accessories as a contrast to the dark paint color, this powder room was well balanced and the final product was beautiful. Lighting played an important role in highlighting the dark tones; we chose a playful bright white chandelier made of iron and paper mache created by Stray Dog Designs. The light source was carefully tucked between the branches of the fixture and when lit, an interesting pattern of shadows reflected on the deep walls.

Creating An Efficient, Quiet Home Office

The busy, working mom of three little boys was forced to work from her home office when the pandemic swept the world in 2020. She needed a space that was efficient and quiet, providing her a secluded getaway from the noise of the house, during persistent virtual conference calls. Her interior design requests were simple: girly (as she was surrounded by all boys in the family) and functional, with the comfort of a larger desk, storage, and adequate seating. We searched for the perfect paint color to start our renovation. Looking through warmer color choices of pinks, peaches, and yellows, we quickly focused in on a blush-hued pink, Sherwin Williams 6052 Sandbank. It is an earthy pink that blends beautifully with natural wood tones and acts as a strong feminine neutral. We chose a lighter stained wood desk and a natural wormy maple built-in shelf system to accent a corner of the room. Keeping with a smooth color transition from other areas of the home, we implemented a large, dark blue chevron area rug with a playful white fringe outlining the edges. A guest chair beside the desk, with a light, smooth velvet blush fabric intensified the feminine feel of the space. Rattan-like materials made their way into the room, adding interesting texture and warmth. Speaking of texture, it was fun creating art for this client!  We used antique tobacco baskets and considering the sound-resistant space she needed, we added multiple balls of yarn as another texture to hold sound. This fun concept definitely helped with another level of sound attenuation, which was the right answer to what this client longed for in a private office within her home.
