Mid-century Modern Office Design

Evident ID - Atlanta, Georgia

Interior Designer’s Notes

Evident ID is a startup software development company providing cybersecurity solutions for managing and sharing personal data. They first opened doors in Tech Alpharetta, a tech startup incubator to more than 50 tech startups. The goal is to help tech companies succeed with the help of the City of Alpharetta. Membership offers free parking, wifi, high-speed, dedicated internet, and 24/7 access. Local companies help with mentoring, investor connections, on-site meetups and events, and a community of tech innovators. Evident ID grew quickly within their first year and found they needed more space with this kind of assistance. They first moved their offices to Tech Square in midtown Atlanta, hoping to attract more employees from graduating Georgia Tech students. After about a year or so, they relocated to TechRise in Buckhead, another hub for tech startups allowing companies to grow quickly.  Our company helped them with each transition, designing functional but understated offices, concentrating on company image and branding. As successful startups get more funding and can attract a larger employee base, their space needs to grow with them. Evident ID, at a capacity of around 100 employees and a healthy fund, decided to build out a space within the Resurgens Building in Buckhead. The building is located conveniently within the Epicenter of Buckhead’s mixed-use district, and it has direct access to a MARTA station. It was an important move for Evident ID to gain their own headquarters and keep and attract even more employees.

Updated From A 1990s Look To A Modern Office Design

The building was undergoing slight renovations and updates, as most of the interior was still reminiscent of the 1990s. The addition of a new company relocating and updating half of one of their floors was a highly welcomed endeavor. The 24,500 square foot shell was located on the 14th floor of the building, with exquisite views of the treetops of the Buckhead area and downtown Atlanta in the distance. We knew we wanted our interior to reflect and complement the wonderful views but also represent the company brand. After their successful journey, the company rebranded and the partners were eager to implement their new brand colors and concepts. Our design concept was mostly Mid-Century modern with touches of industrial modern influence. We left the ceilings exposed with ductwork and pipes but painted it bright white to lighten the space. We added heavier and darker furniture pieces, concrete flooring, and darker, heavily textured carpet tiles. This was a perfect juxtaposition of light and dark elements to create an interesting and contrasting workspace.

In this Mid-Century Modern office design, remnants of past offices were honored; we implemented a company heirloom, the first office bookshelf made with reclaimed wood boards by one of the talented partners. This company icon will travel to new heights for years to come!  Iron and wood furniture pieces were introduced in several areas to pay homage to industrial modern design elements, but most of the space catered to the importance of function. With office furniture products that are made of high-pressure laminates, work surfaces are scratch-resistant and almost indestructible. Multi-person workstations, private office desks, and credenzas were implemented throughout the spacious floor plan. Work surfaces are height adjustable, allowing each individual to raise and lower them as they please during the workday, relieving stress, engaging muscles, and improving blood flow. Movement inspires health, productivity, and creativity.

Several small meeting rooms for breakout sessions were scattered throughout the plan as well. Lounge areas with sectionals and ottomans were placed in open areas to provide a comfortable place to gather and share ideas. A fun concept added within the last five years in commercial office spaces is the introduction of ping pong tables in the employee breakroom areas. Many offices have taken that a step further and brought in shuffleboards, rebound mini basketball hoops, and mini putting greens. This is sure to relieve stress in the workplace!

Installation of furniture for a 24,500 square foot space takes careful planning and coordination, not only of new products but existing office materials as well.  We hired a move coordinator to help us label, sort, and move all files, computers, and personal items. These additional value-added services and an interior design plan that we provided, are great assets to a company that is busy planning its next successful phase.
